      Gr 3-5-These canine profiles cover size, temperament, and other aspects of popular dog breeds. Facts are kept at the simplest level and are usually woven smoothly into the playful tone. Potential challenges to prospective owners of each breed are introduced through questions to the reader: "Don't want dogs that bark a lot? Then pass on a Yorkie" (Yorkshire Terriers). Basic care advice regarding food, health, and grooming are included. Appealing photos of the dogs, on their own or with people, appear on each page and match the encouraging tone of the writing. Closing pages offer brief tips, including name suggestions, and a few added reasons why the featured breed is "the best." VERDICT This series offers appealing breed profiles for younger readers who don't require in-depth information.
