Edgar Rice Burroughs, best known for his Tarzan and Mars series of books, also created the lost island of Caprona, where American Tyler Bowen is stranded in a lost world where prehistoric animals and people have flourished unchanged since the beginning of time.

Written in 1918, this adventure involves not only WWI, but a forgotten continent of dinosaurs and Bronze Age men. This young adult book is fun to listen to with the whole family. It is decidedly not "PC" as it refers to savage men as negroid in appearance while the more advanced types are more Aryan in aspect. Aside from these mistaken racial ideas, this is a rip snorter of a tale, the second in a series begun with AT THE EARTH'S CORE, and by no means the end of this saga. Raymond Todd has a little trouble pronouncing nautical terminology but has fine timing for the drama that unrolls continually. B.H.B. (c) AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine
