In Connelly's first short story, Lee Horsley tells the story of P.O. Stillwell, who trails a recent parolee who owes the gang that helped him during his jail time. As Stillwell gets closer to the perp, he finds the gang's pay-back requirement is his death (at Dodger Stadium). Horsley's pace is perfect, and listeners will be wanting more. Fortunately, there's Elmore Leonard's CHICKASAW CHARLIE HOKE. Dan Cashman tells the story of Charlie's quest to land a job as a celebrity host at Vegas's newest casino. To get the position, this former Major Leaguer must strike out the owner in just four pitches. Cashman's delivery is superb and makes the short story flow. Both stories were part of the 2001 Murderer's Row compilation. R.B.T. (c) AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine
